does short term disability affect your future employment opportunities

Planning to do a surgery for low risk low growth breast cancer. Planning not to have any further treatment. At this point it is more profilactical than emergency measure. Have a good short term disability insurance through employer. The application form has to go through the surgent with complete disclosure of the nature of the surgery. Will it harm my future employment opportunities if I chose to apply for short term disability. Alternative option is to take leave of absence and resume normal activity when recovered.At stake: some loss of income.
